Croatia, officially the Republic of Croatia (Croatian: Republika Hrvatska), is a country at the crossroads of Central and Southeast Europe, on the Adriatic Sea. It is famed as a sea and sun destination and is best known for its beaches. The coastline of Croatia is nearly 600 km long, not including the coastline of the Croatian islands. And the country is dotted with hundreds of islands. Because of the stunning beaches, numerous islands, and historic towns and landmarks, Croatia is a very popular holiday destination for Europeans. Recently the country has become even more popular because the popular series “Game of Thrones” was filmed in various places in the country. But what to do in Croatia? To help you prepare for your trip to Croatia, we have created this list of some of the best places to visit in Croatia.

Split, Croatia

Split is a vibrant coastal city located in Croatia, specifically in the region of Dalmatia. It is the second-largest city in Croatia, after Zagreb, and serves as an important cultural, economic, and transportation hub in the country. Split is known for its rich history, stunning architecture, and beautiful natural surroundings.

One of the main attractions in Split is the Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built by the Roman emperor Diocletian in the 4th century AD, the palace is a remarkable complex that includes a mix of Roman, Gothic, and Renaissance architecture. Today, the palace is filled with shops, restaurants, and residences, creating a unique blend of ancient and modern elements.

The city centre of Split, often referred to as the “Old Town,” is a maze of narrow streets and charming squares. The main square, known as the Peristyle, is a central gathering place surrounded by ancient buildings and the St. Duje’s Cathedral, which was originally built as a mausoleum for Diocletian. Climbing the cathedral’s bell tower offers breathtaking views of the city and the Adriatic Sea.

The Riva, Split’s waterfront promenade, is another popular spot for locals and visitors alike. Lined with cafes, restaurants, and palm trees, it offers a picturesque setting for a leisurely stroll or enjoying a drink while watching the sunset. From the Riva, you can also take a ferry to visit the nearby islands, such as Hvar, Brac, and Vis, known for their pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters.

Marjan Hill, located on the western side of Split, provides a green oasis with walking trails and panoramic views of the city and the surrounding area. It’s an excellent place for outdoor activities like hiking, jogging, or simply enjoying nature.

Split has a vibrant cultural scene, with numerous museums, galleries, and theatres. The Archaeological Museum showcases artefacts from the Roman era, while the Gallery of Fine Arts exhibits works by Croatian and international artists. The Croatian National Theatre in Split hosts a variety of performances, including opera, ballet, and theatre.

In addition to its cultural and historical attractions, Split offers a lively nightlife with plenty of bars, clubs, and live music venues. The city’s cuisine is also a highlight, with a focus on fresh seafood, Mediterranean flavours, and local specialities like “pašticada” (a traditional Dalmatian beef stew) and “peka” (a dish prepared under a bell-shaped lid).
