Czech Republic travel tips

  1. It’s easy to travel around the Czech Republic. It is a relatively small country. Mostly it takes just 3-5 hours to get from one city to another. And the country has a good transport system. Buses and trains are reliable and inexpensive.
  2. However, bus services are cheaper than trains and great for accessing areas where train services are poor. Several bus companies operate in the Czech Republic. Flixbus and RegioJet are two of the most popular carriers.
  3. In Prague opt for a day pass (or a 3-day pass) which allows you to travel on a tram, metro, and bus. If you plan to use public transport a lot, a day pass will be way cheaper than buying single 30 or 90-minute tickets all the time.
  4. If you want to withdraw money, look for ATMs of the local banks (e.g., Česká spořitelna, ČSOB, Komercni Banka, UniCredit Bank CZ). We do not recommend you to use non-bank ATMs (e.g., EuroNet ATM). These ATMs charge big fees and offer bad exchange rates.
  5. If the ATM (or the card terminal at a shop) offers you to either charge you in local currency or in your currency, always choose the local currency. If you select your (home) currency, the ATM or card terminal converts the Czech krone (CZK) at its own rate, which is usually a poor rate.
  6. Beer has a long history in the Czech Republic. Do try local beers when visiting the Czech Republic. They’re cheap and very good. The most common Czech beers are pale lagers of pilsner type.
  7. As the Czech Republic is a very popular destination in Europe, it gets very crowded in major tourist hotspots. Travel to the Czech Republic during the fall or winter when it receives fewer crowds.
