Discover EU: Free interrail trip (at least 20`000 tickets)

The European Commission is launching a new call for applications for DiscoverEU travel passes. All 18-year-olds in the EU have until 16 May 2019 to apply, giving them the opportunity to discover Europe between 1 August 2019 and 31 January 2020.

What is DiscoverEU?

DiscoverEU is an EU initiative giving 18-year-old young people from all backgrounds the opportunity to travel around Europe (mainly by rail), learn from other cultures, make new friendships with fellow Europeans, and explore their European identity. When DiscoverEU was organized for the first time in 2018, young people embraced the opportunity with enthusiasm. Nearly 180,000 young people applied for the almost 30,000 travel passes available over two application rounds in 2018. The allocation of the travel passes was based on the share of Member States’ population compared to the overall population of
the EU. All country quotas were used.

When is the next round?

Almost 30 000 young people were awarded a travel pass in 2018. Another round will take place from 2 May 2019 at 12:00 (CEST) to 16 May 2019 at 12:00 (CEST).

To be eligible, you need to be born between 2 July 2000 (included) and 1 July 2001 (included), have the nationality of one of the Member States of the European Union at the time of the award decision and fill in the correct ID or passport number on the online application form. All you have to do is to participate in a quiz and answer a subsidiary question. If you are selected, you can travel for a period of minimum 1 day and up to 30 days between 1 August 2019 and 31 January 2020. Why not seize this chance to experience the freedom of movement, better understand Europe’s diversity, enjoy its cultural richness, make new friends and ultimately, discover yourself?

Note that if you have a disability or a health problem that makes your trip challenging, DiscoverEU has special conditions to help you take part in DiscoverEU.

Who can apply?

To be eligible, young applicants must:

  • be 18 years old on 1 July 2019, i.e. those young people born between 2 July 2000 (included) and 1 July 2001 (included);
  • have the nationality of one of the Member States of the European Union at the time of the award decision;
  • fill in the correct ID or passport number on the online application form.

If awarded, selected applicants can only travel if they:

  • start their journey in a country which is a Member State of the European Union at the time of the award decision;
  • plan to travel between 1 day and up to one month inclusive;
  • plan to travel to at least one foreign country which is a Member State of the European Union at the time of the award decision;

DiscoverEU is a preparatory action initiated by the European Parliament with the objective of providing traveling and mobility opportunities to young people turning 18 years old. The action specifically targets 18 years old, as this age generally marks a major step to adulthood and to European citizenship.

Can I travel with my friends?

Yes, you can! It really is up to you. You can go solo or bring your friends along. In fact, you can add up to 4 friends to your group.

You can also organize meet-ups and combine travel plans with other DiscoverEU travelers! The DiscoverEU Facebook Group is a good platform to do this. Join the Group now to chat with other participants.

What is expected from me?

By becoming a DiscoverEU Ambassador, you are invited to report back on your travel experiences through social media tools like Instagram, Facebook or Twitter using #DiscoverEU. You could even give a presentation at your school or local community. Moreover, you could participate in the #DiscoverEU photo/video #Competition and win great prizes. Get inspired and check the pictures and videos of the previous rounds.
