Nador is a city located in the northeastern Rif region of Morocco, situated on the salt lagoon of Sebkha Bou Areq. The city is a Mediterranean port on the Bḥar Ameẓẓyan lagoon (Mar Chica in Spanish), and it is the major trading center in the region for fish, fruit, and livestock. It is linked to the Spanish city of Melilla, 10 kilometers (6.2 mi) to the north, by a semi-motorway. The city has a population of about 200,000 inhabitants. Nador is the provincial capital for the Nador Province in the Moroccan Oriental Region. Just eight miles from Melilla, it is recognized as a border town with a Spanish atmosphere, environment and architecture. Nador is believed to be founded by the Amazigh Riffian people, but has later been ruled by the Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, and most recently the Spaniards, until Morocco’s independence in 1956.
