10 of the creepiest travel destinations in the world!

If you had some good Halloween parties yesterday you might got inspired to see some more of skeletons, zombies or haunted places. The world is full of creepy and haunted locations but the Travelfree has selected 10 of them which might give you chills or inspire you to pack your bags, get on a plane and explore the places which some people see in their nightmares.

1. Paris Catacombs (France)

Under the streets of Paris lie the remains of some 6 million people. During the 18th century Paris cemeteries got overcrowded so the local authorities decided to rebury the  dead underneath the city. So if the Paris does not attract you as the city of love you might want to see it as the city of dead. Not all of the catacombs are open for visitors, though.

2. Suicide Forest in Aokigahara Jukai (Japan)

This is a place where you would not like to get lost. Everywhere people find about 100 dead bodies there and it is the most popular destination for suiciders in the whole country. Recently, the signs offering psychological help have been put but people still choose this place for taking their own lives.

3. Stanley Hotel, Estes Park, Colorado (USA)

Even though it does not look frightening at the first look it actually has the reputation of the haunted hotel. It is confirmed by the master of horror Stephen King himself. The chilling vibe of Stanley Hotel inspired him to create “The Shining”. According to the stories, a ghost named Eddie lives here who is known to stroke whomen’s hair and kiss them on the cheeks.

4. Hill of Crosses, Šiauliai (Lithuania)

It is believed that the first crosses began to appear in this place in the first half of the 19th century. The Soviet government tried to demolish the place numerous times but the crosses kept appearing and appearing. Now it is believed that there are around 200 thousand crosses which are not the place to be if you do not feel comfortable surrounded by the crucifixes.

5. Island of the Dolls, Mexico City (Mexico)

More than 50 years ago Julian Santana Barrera found a dead girl and her doll floating in a canal. Barrera took the doll with him to his isolated island and later heard cries and footsteps of the girl so he hung the girl on the tree. Haunting did not cease so he started hanging dozens of dolls. In 2001 Barrera drowned in the same spot where he had found the dead girl. If this place will not give you chills then congratulations – probably nothing gives you chills.

6. Alcatraz Prison, San Francisco, California (USA)

This place had many purposes: a Civil War fortress, a bird sanctuary, etc. But most famously a prison. It had the fame as the prison which is impossible to escape, yet 6 prisoners almost succeeded to in 1946. No their cell D is said to be haunted. Some say that you can even hear the notorious Al Capone practicing his banjo.

7. North Yungas Road (Bolivia)

The more common word for this terrifying place is the Death Road. The narrow road has barely no security measures which could guarantee that you will not fall down the precipice. It is claimed that 200-300 people died on this road every year during the 90s’.

8. Ilha da Queimada Grande (Brazil)

If you are afraid of the snakes you probably do not even want to hear about this place. The island is actually better known by the name Snake Island because it is home to some 2-4 thousand venomous endangered snakes known as golden lancehead pit viper but the island itself is very small. However, visitors are not allowed into the island for the safety of themselves and the snakes too.

9. Bran Castle (Romania)

Everyone knows the blood-sucking vampire count Dracula. But did you know that he was based on a ruler that actually lived – Vlad the Impaler. Some people argue that the Bran Castle is where the Bram Stoker’s Dracula events take place. Could there be any better attractions for the next Halloween that roaming among the Count Dracula’s walls?

10. Highgate Cemetery, London (UK)

Some 170,000 people are buried there in approximately 53,000 graves. Among them Karl Marx, George Eliot, Douglas Adams and others. Yet the place is known not only for the celebrities resting there. Since 1970s’ the locals have maintained that a ghostly figure – which was named the Highgate Vampire – have been appearing in the cemetery. Would you dare to come and check for yourself?
