Wizz Air reopens Târgu Mures (Romania) base with 9 new routes from March 2026

Wizz Air has announced the reopening of its base at Târgu Mureș “Transylvania” International Airport, bringing nine new routes to key destinations across Europe from spring 2026. The ultra-low-cost carrier will base a modern Airbus A320neo aircraft at the airport and offer introductory fares from just 14.99 EUR (79 RON) one way, giving travellers in central Romania more choice for cheap flights to Western and Southern Europe.

Wizz Air returns to its first-ever Romanian airport

Târgu Mureș has a special place in Wizz Air’s history. The airport was the first in Romania that Wizz Air ever served, with its inaugural flight back in 2006. After nearly two decades and a period without a base, the airline is now returning in force by reopening the base and stationing an Airbus A320neo aircraft on site.

With the additional aircraft at Târgu Mureș, Wizz Air plans to operate close to 40 aircraft in Romania during the winter season and now offers 10 routes to eight countries from Târgu Mureș, including the existing link to Budapest. Across the country, the carrier operates more than 200 routes from 14 Romanian airports, connecting passengers to 82 destinations in 27 countries.

The reopened base will also create around 40 new local jobs for flight and ground staff, underlining the importance of the airline’s investment in the Transylvania region.

Why this is big news for travellers in Transylvania

For passengers in central Romania – especially those living in Târgu Mureș, Mureș County and nearby cities such as Cluj-Napoca, Sibiu and Brașov – the reopening of the Wizz Air base means:

  • More direct connections to popular European hubs like Brussels, London and Milan, plus leisure destinations such as Larnaca and Rome.
  • Shorter travel times compared to driving to larger airports like Cluj or Bucharest for low-cost flights.
  • Lower prices thanks to Wizz Air’s ultra-low-cost model and promotional fares from 14.99 EUR one way.
  • Better connectivity for the region, making it easier for friends, family, business travellers and tourists to reach Transylvania.

The new routes also open up weekend and short-break opportunities, with many flights scheduled conveniently on Fridays, Mondays and over the weekend.

How to book Wizz Air flights to and from Târgu Mureș

Tickets for the new routes are already on sale on wizzair.com and via the official Wizz Air mobile app. Introductory prices start from 79 RON / 14.99 EUR one way, including mandatory taxes but excluding optional services such as checked baggage, seat selection or WIZZ Priority.

When booking, keep in mind:

  • The lowest prices are usually available on off-peak dates and when booking early.
  • Fares are shown per segment (one-way), not as a return price.
  • Additional services (checked baggage, large cabin bag, seat reservation, priority boarding) significantly increase the final ticket cost.

Tips for flying Wizz Air from Târgu Mureș

To make the most of these new routes:

  • Check baggage rules carefully – standard tickets only include a small under-seat bag; larger cabin bags and checked baggage cost extra.
  • Do online check-in via the app or website to avoid airport check-in fees and queues.
  • Arrive early for the first weeks of operation – new routes and a reopened base can mean busier-than-usual check-in and security.
  • Watch for promotions – Wizz Air regularly runs 10–25% off sales on selected routes, which may include the new Târgu Mureș flights.
