Some airlines “could soon pay you to fly with them”-according to CEO of WOWair.

“In the future we could pay you to fly with us,” Skúli Mogensen, WOWair’s CEO, told Telegraph Travel in an interview.

The latest boom in budget airlines has made travelling available for many people and also enabled to travel further and more often than ever before.

Budget airlines are getting a big portion of their revenue from selling extra services like checked-in luggage, a meal and seat selection and others. Airlines also sell extras such as car hire and hotel bookings to customers. Revenue from these additional services could eventually become more valuable than what airlines charge for seats. In this way, WOWair and other airlines could theoretically pay people to fly with them and still make money from the flight. However still this fare will unfortunately will not be available for everyone.

Passengers who might be paid to travel, according to Mogensen, are passengers who WOWair has built up a “special relationship” with and who want to make the airline an “integral” part of their travel plans, when it comes to booking hotels and activities, for example.

CEO of WOWair also said that it can be financially beneficial for airlines to reward some of their customers with free flights because of the social media.

“A lot of people now, both pre- and post-travel, share pictures with their friends,” he explained. “If we do a good job and they spread the word, it is powerful customer feedback. As they are our advocate, they can be rewarded accordingly.”
