Last updated: 14 October 2026. Rules checked against Turkish Airlines’ official Stopover terms.

Yes, the Turkish Airlines stopover hotel is really free, but only if your ticket qualifies. If your round trip starts in one of the 34 eligible European countries and you connect at Istanbul Airport (IST) for 20 hours to 7 days, Turkish Airlines pays for 1 night in a 4-star hotel in Economy or 2 nights in a 5-star or boutique hotel in Business, with breakfast. You must apply at least 72 hours before the flight.

That turns a long connection on your way to Bangkok, Bali, the Maldives or Zanzibar into a free mini-break in a city that has been at the centre of world history for more than 2,000 years. This guide is written for travellers flying from Europe, from the Baltics and the Nordics to the UK and the Mediterranean.

What is the Turkish Airlines Stopover in Istanbul program?

Stopover in Istanbul is a Turkish Airlines program that gives you a free hotel room in Istanbul when you choose a long connection of 20 hours to 7 days at Istanbul Airport. You pick the long connection on purpose when you book. In return, the airline books and pays for a partner hotel, with breakfast.

The reason is simple: Turkish Airlines flies to more countries than any other airline. Guinness World Records counted 131 countries when it gave the airline the record in 2024 (Travel Radar), and almost every route connects through Istanbul. A free night turns “change planes in Istanbul” into “visit Istanbul”.

Stopover vs Hotel Service vs Touristanbul: which free perk is yours?

Turkish Airlines runs three free programmes for connecting passengers, and they are easy to mix up. Which one you get depends on how long your connection is and whether you chose it.

Chart of free Turkish Airlines perks by connection time at Istanbul Airport: Touristanbul tour 6 to 24 hours, Hotel Service 9 hours Business or 12 hours Economy, Stopover hotel 20 hours to 7 days
Which free Turkish Airlines perk fits your connection time at Istanbul Airport.
Stopover in Istanbul Hotel Service (long transfer) Touristanbul
What you get Free hotel + breakfast Free hotel, transfers and a meal Free guided city tour with a meal
Connection length 20 hours to 7 days 12+ hours Economy, 9+ hours Business 6 to 24 hours
Why you have the long wait You choose it No shorter connection exists on your route Either
Free nights 1 to 3 Up to 2 None
Airport transfers included No Yes Yes (tour vehicle)
How to get it Apply online or by email, at least 72 hours before Hotel Desk, arrivals level, Istanbul Airport Book online with your PNR, or at the Touristanbul Desk
Codeshare flights Not eligible Eligible if Turkish Airlines operates the flight Ticket must start with 235

The key difference: the Hotel Service is a courtesy when the timetable forces a long wait. If a shorter connection exists, even a fully booked one, you don’t get it. The Stopover program is for a long connection you choose so you can see the city. You can’t combine the Stopover hotel and Touristanbul on the same route.

Can travellers from Europe get the free stopover hotel?

Yes, if your round trip starts in one of the 34 European countries on Turkish Airlines’ list, and ends in the same country. The country where your Turkish Airlines journey begins is what counts, not your nationality. Each country has its own application email.

Not eligible: Bulgaria, Slovakia and others

As of 14 October 2026, trips starting in Albania, Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Iceland and Slovakia don’t qualify for the free stopover hotel.

Tip: the rule is about where your Turkish Airlines round trip starts. If you live near a border, you can start from an eligible neighbour instead:

  • Slovakia: start in Vienna (Austria) or Budapest (Hungary).
  • Bulgaria: start in Bucharest (Romania), Thessaloniki or Athens (Greece).
  • Albania: start in Podgorica (Montenegro) or Skopje (North Macedonia).
  • Cyprus: start in Athens (Greece).

The round trip must start and end in that same country. The current terms say nothing about where you live, but the list changes, so confirm with the stopover team for that country before you book.

Eligible countries outside Europe

Turkish Airlines lists 64 more departure countries. Emails follow the same pattern, freehotel[country]@thy.com, except Pakistan (freehotel@thy.com).

Region Eligible departure countries

How many free nights do you get? Economy vs Business

Travellers from Europe get the standard allowance: 1 free night in a 4-star hotel in Economy, or 2 free nights in a 5-star or boutique hotel in Business. One extra night applies only to trips that start in 8 countries outside Europe.

Turkish Airlines stopover free hotel nights: trips from Europe get 1 night in Economy and 2 in Business; trips from 8 countries including the USA and Japan get 2 and 3 nights
Free stopover nights by cabin and departure country, 2026 rules.
Cabin Hotel category Free nights: Europe and most countries Free nights: USA, mainland China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea Meals included
Economy 4-star 1 2 Breakfast
Business 5-star or boutique 2 3 Breakfast
  • Free nights must be back to back. You can’t split them between the outbound and return.
  • Want to stay longer? Your connection can last up to 7 days, but only the nights above are free. Once you have your voucher, contact the hotel to book extra nights at Turkish Airlines’ special rates.
  • Mixed cabins: if you fly Business one way and Economy the other, you get the allowance of the cabin on the stopover leg.

What changed in 2026

  • Fewer countries get extra nights. In late 2025, guides listed 13 extra-night countries, including Australia, Canada, Chile, Mexico and New Zealand (AwardWallet, Oct 2025). Now only 8 do. No European country has ever been on that list.
  • Your departure country must be on the list. The current terms limit the service to 98 departure countries. Many older guides never mention this.
  • Codeshare flights are spelled out as excluded. One partner-operated leg can cost you the hotel.
  • Touristanbul changed its tours on 1 May 2026. It now runs 4 routes, and you can book online with your booking code (PNR).

Best routes from Europe for an Istanbul stopover

A stopover works best when Istanbul is on your way, and from most of Europe it is. On flights to East Africa, the Indian Ocean and much of Asia, connecting in Istanbul adds little or no distance.

We calculated the extra great-circle distance on popular Turkish Airlines routes from Europe. Istanbul sits almost exactly on the straight line from Riga to Nairobi: the detour is just 1 km. London to the Maldives adds 14 km (0.2%), Berlin to Malé 1.4% and Frankfurt to Singapore 2.3%. Riga to Bangkok adds 17% and Warsaw to Seoul 20%. Helsinki to Tokyo is the exception, at 42%.

Bar chart of extra distance when connecting in Istanbul instead of flying direct: Riga to Nairobi adds 0 percent, Berlin to Maldives 1.4 percent, Riga to Bangkok 17 percent, Helsinki to Tokyo 41.9 percent
Extra distance via Istanbul on routes from Europe. Great-circle distances; real flight paths are longer where airspace is closed. TravelFree calculation, October 2026.

How to book a Turkish Airlines stopover from Europe (step by step)

Book a round trip with a 20+ hour connection in Istanbul using the multi-city search, then apply for the hotel voucher at least 72 hours before you fly. Here is the full process, using a trip from Riga to Bangkok as the example.

  1. Check your departure country. Latvia is on the eligible list, so a trip from Riga qualifies.
  2. Search with “Multi-city” on turkishairlines.com and add Istanbul as a separate stop:
    • Flight 1: Riga (RIX) to Istanbul (IST), 10 March
    • Flight 2: Istanbul (IST) to Bangkok (BKK), 11 March, at least 20 hours after you land
    • Flight 3: Bangkok (BKK) to Riga (RIX), 24 March, with a normal connection in Istanbul
  3. Check the fare before you pay. The fare class must not be N or R, every flight must be “operated by Turkish Airlines”, and the whole trip must be one booking. Compare the price with a normal connection. A stopover often costs the same or slightly more, but it can be higher on busy dates.
  4. Buy the ticket and note your 13-digit ticket number. It must start with 235. If you book through an agency, ask for the ticket number.
  5. Apply for the hotel the same day. The deadline is 72 hours before the flight. Use the “Booker” link on the official Stopover page (last name and ticket number), or email your country’s address, such as freehotellatvia@thy.com, freehoteluk@thy.com or freehotelgermany@thy.com.
  6. Get your hotel voucher by email. It shows the hotel and your check-in and check-out times. Turkish Airlines picks the hotel, and you can’t change it on request.
  7. Contact the hotel directly about cots, connecting rooms, pets or a late arrival. Add any disability or reduced-mobility needs to your flight booking before you apply.
  8. Check your documents. Most EU, EEA, UK and Swiss citizens need no visa (see below). Türkiye advises a passport valid for at least 6 months from arrival.
  9. On arrival, go through passport control. If your connection is longer than 24 hours, collect your checked bags. Then make your own way to the hotel and show your voucher and boarding pass at check-in.
  10. Be back at the airport about 3 hours before your onward flight. Istanbul traffic is unpredictable and the airport is huge.

Sample email to request your stopover hotel

If you apply by email, send everything in one message so the team doesn’t need to write back:

Turkish Airlines stopover hotel list: which hotel will you get?

You can’t choose your hotel. Turkish Airlines assigns one of its partner hotels, depending on rooms available. The official terms say hotels near the city centre and tourist areas get priority. In busy seasons you may be placed elsewhere, and no specific hotel is guaranteed.

The hotels are in the city, not at the airport, which is about 40 km from the centre. Turkish Airlines doesn’t publish a hotel list and the partners change, but these hotels were reported in 2025 (AwardWallet):

Area Hotels reported
Şişli, Beşiktaş and Maslak (business district) Conrad Istanbul Bosphorus, Hilton Istanbul Bosphorus, Hilton Istanbul Bomonti, Istanbul Marriott Hotel Şişli, Radisson Blu Şişli, Grand Cevahir, Dedeman Istanbul, Wish More Hotel Şişli, Le Méridien Istanbul Etiler, Hilton Istanbul Maslak
Old City (Fatih) and Beyoğlu Armada Hotel Istanbul, Grand Yavuz Hotel, Eresin Hotels Topkapı, Radisson Blu Pera
Ataköy and Yeşilköy (west, on the Sea of Marmara) Hyatt Regency Istanbul Ataköy, Ramada Plaza by Wyndham Ataköy, Polat Renaissance
Other areas Vialand Palace Hotel, Wish More Hotel Istanbul

Rule of thumb: a voucher for the Old City or Beyoğlu puts you within walking distance of the main sights. A voucher for Şişli or Maslak puts you near the M2 metro line, a few stops from Taksim.

How to get from Istanbul Airport to your hotel

  • M11 metro: Istanbul Airport to Gayrettepe, then the M2 line for Şişli, Taksim and Maslak. The most reliable option at rush hour.
  • Havaist airport buses: direct routes to Taksim, Sultanahmet, Ataköy and other districts. Cheap, but slow in traffic.
  • Taxi or pre-booked transfer: door to door, best with luggage or late at night. Allow 45 to 90 minutes.

Transfers are not included in the stopover. Turkish Airlines’ airport transport page lists the current options.

Istanbul stopover itinerary: 33 hours between Riga and Bangkok

With one free night, the best plan is to land in the morning and fly out the next evening. This example lands at 10:00 and leaves at 19:00 the next day: 33 hours in Istanbul for the price of transfers and meals.

Hour-by-hour 33-hour Istanbul stopover itinerary from Riga to Bangkok: Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Galata Bridge sunset, Topkapi Palace, Bosphorus ferry, Grand Bazaar
Example 33-hour stopover with one free hotel night. Your voucher sets the real check-in and check-out times.
  • Day 1: land at 10:00, clear passport control and collect your bags, then take the M11 metro or a taxi to the hotel. Spend the afternoon in Sultanahmet (Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Basilica Cistern), watch the sunset from the Galata Bridge and have dinner in Karaköy.
  • Day 2: breakfast at the hotel, Topkapı Palace, then check out and leave your bags. Take a public ferry to Üsküdar, crossing from Europe to Asia, and finish at the Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar. Leave for the airport at 15:00 for a 19:00 flight.

2 or 3 nights (Business)? Add Dolmabahçe Palace and a Bosphorus cruise, an evening on İstiklal Avenue and at Galata Tower, the colourful streets of Balat and Fener, and a ferry to Kadıköy for the food markets. More ideas: best places to visit in Istanbul.

Istanbul stopover facts: 8 things worth knowing

  1. Turkish Airlines flies to more countries than any other airline. Guinness World Records counted 131 countries in its 2024 record (Travel Radar).
  2. Istanbul Airport handled 84.4 million passengers in 2025, just 44,416 fewer than London Heathrow, Europe’s busiest airport (Euronews, ACI data).
  3. Istanbul lies almost exactly between Riga and Nairobi. Connecting there adds just 1 km to the trip (TravelFree calculation).
  4. The city has shaped history for more than 2,000 years. It was the capital of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) and Ottoman empires (UNESCO).
  5. Hagia Sophia took just five years to build, from 532 to 537 (UNESCO).
  6. The Theodosian land walls run for 6,650 metres and date from 447. You pass them on the free Touristanbul sightseeing tour.
  7. The Süleymaniye Mosque is the work of the architect Sinan, built between 1550 and 1557 (UNESCO).
  8. You can change continents on a public ferry. Boats from Eminönü and Karaköy cross the Bosphorus to Üsküdar and Kadıköy in Asia.

Shorter connection? Touristanbul, the free Istanbul tour

If your connection is 6 to 24 hours, Touristanbul gives you a free guided city tour with transport and a meal, but no hotel. It is open to Turkish Airlines passengers connecting between two international flights at Istanbul Airport.

Since 1 May 2026 there are four tours (official schedule):

Tour Time What you see
Sightseeing Tour 08:00–11:30 Panoramic drive past Taksim, the Valens Aqueduct, the city walls, the Galata Bridge, the Golden Horn and Dolmabahçe Palace. You stay on the bus.
Half-day tour 08:30–15:00 Breakfast, then a route that changes by weekday: the Blue Mosque and Hippodrome, Dolmabahçe and Ortaköy, Balat and Fener, Galata, a Golden Horn and Bosphorus cruise, or Topkapı Palace
Evening tour 16:00–21:30 Grand Bazaar (closed Sundays), the Hippodrome, the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia (from outside) and dinner
Bosphorus tour 18:30–23:00 Dinner and a Bosphorus cruise. Runs 1 April to 31 October only.
  • Book online with your booking code (PNR) or ticket number, or register at the Touristanbul Desk on the arrivals level.
  • Be at the desk 30 minutes before the tour. Getting there takes about 45 minutes, including passport control.
  • Leave at least 1 hour 25 minutes between the end of the tour and your next flight.
  • Ticket rules: both flights on one booking, ticket number starting with 235.

Hotel or tour? With a 20 to 24-hour connection you may qualify for both, but you can only use one on the same route. A free night in a 4- or 5-star hotel is usually worth more.

Visa and costs for travellers from Europe

Most Europeans can enter Türkiye without a visa, so the stopover costs you only transfers, meals and sightseeing. The hotel is outside the airport, so you must legally enter the country. Selected rules from Türkiye’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (ordinary passports):

Passport Entry for a stopover
EU and EEA countries, for example Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Finland, Sweden, Germany, France, Spain, Italy Visa-free, up to 90 days
United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland Visa-free, up to 90 days
Republic of Cyprus Visa required: apply for an e-Visa at evisa.gov.tr. Border visas ended on 2 January 2026.
Moldova, Georgia, Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina Visa-free, up to 90 days
Russia Visa-free, up to 60 days
Belarus Visa-free, up to 30 days
Armenia e-Visa required
Non-EU nationals living in Europe (for example India, Pakistan, Bangladesh) Visa required, but a one-month e-Visa is possible with a valid Schengen, UK, US or Irish visa or residence permit, if you meet the conditions

Rules change, so check before you travel, and apply for an e-Visa only at evisa.gov.tr. Türkiye advises a passport valid for at least 6 months from arrival.

What you pay on a free stopover

  • Airport transfers: metro or bus is cheapest, a taxi or private transfer costs most. Budget for two trips.
  • Meals: only breakfast is included.
  • Sightseeing: museum and palace tickets, such as Topkapı Palace.
  • Extra nights: at Turkish Airlines’ special rates, booked directly with the hotel.
  • Fare difference: there is no stopover fee, but flights on your chosen dates may cost more than the fastest connection.

Is the Turkish Airlines stopover worth it?

Yes, for most eligible travellers from Europe. A free 4- or 5-star room turns a connection into a city break for the cost of transfers and meals. It is best value in Business, with 2 nights in a 5-star or boutique hotel, and on long trips to Asia or Africa, where a break helps with jet lag.

Worth it if… Skip it if…
You fly to Asia, Africa or the Indian Ocean, where Istanbul is on your way You fly to North America: from most of Europe, Istanbul is the wrong direction
You land in the morning and leave the next evening You land late at night and leave early the next morning
The fare on your stopover dates costs the same or a little more The stopover dates push the fare up by more than a hotel night costs
You fly Business and get 2 nights in a 5-star hotel You’re on an N or R fare or a codeshare flight
You want to see Istanbul without a separate trip You’re on a tight schedule or travelling with tired children

Timing tip: check-in and check-out times are printed on your voucher and based on your flights. If you land at 05:00, you may wait until standard check-in time. If you check in late at night, you may still have to check out at the standard time the next morning.

9 mistakes that cost travellers their free stopover hotel

  1. Applying too late. The deadline is 72 hours before the flight, and nothing is accepted after you land. Apply the day you book.
  2. Flying a low-cost airline to Istanbul and buying Turkish Airlines onward. Separate tickets never qualify, and neither do flights to Sabiha Gökçen (SAW).
  3. Starting from a country that isn’t on the list, such as Bulgaria or Slovakia.
  4. Buying an N or R fare. Check the fare class before you pay, not after.
  5. Including a codeshare flight. One partner-operated flight disqualifies the trip.
  6. Cutting the connection too close. 19 hours 59 minutes is not 20 hours. Recheck after any schedule change.
  7. Changing your ticket without a new voucher. Vouchers are tied to the ticket number.
  8. Forgetting your bags. If your connection is over 24 hours, collect your checked bags at baggage claim.
  9. Planning both Touristanbul and the hotel on the same route. You can only use one.

Turkish Airlines stopover FAQ

Is the Turkish Airlines stopover hotel free?

Yes. Eligible passengers get a free hotel room with breakfast in Istanbul: 1 night in a 4-star hotel in Economy or 2 nights in a 5-star or boutique hotel in Business. Trips starting in the USA, mainland China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore or South Korea get one extra night. Transfers, other meals and visas are not included.

Can I get the free stopover hotel if I fly from the UK or the EU?

Yes, if your round trip starts and ends in one of the 34 eligible European countries, including the UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Poland and the Nordic and Baltic countries. As of October 2026, trips starting in Bulgaria, Slovakia, Cyprus, Albania or Iceland do not qualify.

How long can a Turkish Airlines stopover in Istanbul be?

Your connection must be at least 20 hours and at most 7 days (168 hours). Only the free nights for your cabin and departure country are covered. You can add more nights at Turkish Airlines’ special rates by contacting the hotel directly.

What is the Turkish Airlines stopover email address?

Each departure country has its own address in the format freehotel plus the country name at thy.com, for example freehoteluk@thy.com, freehotelgermany@thy.com or freehotellatvia@thy.com. You can also apply online with your last name and ticket number. Apply at least 72 hours before the flight.

Does Turkish Airlines give a free hotel for a long layover?

Yes, through a separate Hotel Service. Economy passengers with a connection of 12 hours or more and Business passengers with 9 hours or more get a free hotel, transfers and a meal, but only if no shorter connection exists on the route. You request it at the Hotel Desk on the arrivals level at Istanbul Airport.

Can I leave Istanbul Airport during a layover?

Yes, if you can legally enter Türkiye and have enough time. Most EU, EEA, UK and Swiss citizens can enter without a visa. Allow about 45 minutes for passport control, 45 to 90 minutes each way to the city, and be back about 3 hours before your next flight.

Can I choose my stopover hotel?

No. Turkish Airlines assigns a partner hotel based on available rooms. Hotels near the city centre and tourist areas get priority, but no specific hotel is guaranteed, and the voucher can’t be changed on request.

Are airport transfers included in the Turkish Airlines stopover?

No. You pay to get between Istanbul Airport and your hotel by M11 metro, Havaist bus or taxi. Allow 45 to 90 minutes each way.

Can I use the Turkish Airlines stopover on a one-way ticket?

No. You need a round trip on one booking that starts and ends in the same country. You can use the stopover once, on the outbound or the return.

Can I get a Turkish Airlines stopover with miles?

The official terms do not exclude Miles and Smiles award tickets. Travel guides report they qualify if every other rule is met: ticket number starting with 235, flights operated by Turkish Airlines, a connection of 20 hours or more, and an application at least 72 hours ahead.

Do EU citizens need a visa for an Istanbul stopover?

Most do not. Citizens of EU and EEA countries, the UK and Switzerland can visit Türkiye visa-free for short stays. Republic of Cyprus passport holders need an e-Visa from evisa.gov.tr. Non-EU nationals living in Europe may qualify for an e-Visa with a valid Schengen or UK visa or residence permit.

Can I do Touristanbul and the free stopover hotel on the same trip?

Not on the same route. You can use the Stopover hotel on one leg and join Touristanbul on the other leg if that connection is 6 to 24 hours.
