British Airways cancelled all flights from / to Italy

British Airways cancelled all of its flights to and from Italy until 4th of April. BA removed the change fee on all new bookings made from Tuesday 3 March to Monday 31 March 2020.

A spokesperson for BA said: ‘In light of the Italian government’s announcement and the UK government’s official travel advice, we have contacted all customers who are due to travel today (10 March).’ The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office has warned against all but essential travel to the country. There are currently more than 10 000 cases of Covid-19, meaning the nation now has the largest amount of infected people outside of China. In total, 631 people have died of the virus in Italy. Some three million British nationals visit Italy every year. Anyone returning from Italy to the UK will be asked to self-isolate for 14 days, Metro reported.

As many as 20,000 British tourists face being stranded in Italy after all major airlines cancelled flights, with passengers claiming they have been ‘dumped’ in cities and ski resorts. Some travellers could have to try and make their way home by road and rail as Italy went into lockdown and imposed strict travel restrictions over fears of the spreading virus. Passengers on the near-empty planes revealed that they were not tested on arrival and there was no-one advising them how to get home to start their 14-day isolation period. Hand sanitiser pumps in the terminals were also completely empty, according to Daily Mail.

To allow greater flexibility British Airways removed the change fee on all new bookings made from Tuesday 3 March to Monday 31 March 2020.
