How Much Time You Actually Get in Each Port

Port hours matter more than port names. Here is what each call realistically allows.

Barcelona — about 5.5 hours, afternoon and evening

Docking at 14:30 and leaving at 20:30 rules out a full sightseeing day. Barcelona’s cruise terminals are at the far end of the port, so budget 30 to 45 minutes each way for the shuttle and walk. That leaves roughly four usable hours: enough for the Gothic Quarter and La Rambla, or a single ticketed sight if you have booked a timed slot in advance. Sagrada Família plus anything else is not realistic.

Málaga — 10 hours, a proper day

Málaga’s port is a short walk from the old town, which is unusual and genuinely valuable. Ten hours covers the Alcazaba, the cathedral, the Picasso Museum and lunch without hurrying. Inland trips to Granada or Ronda are possible but eat three hours in transit each way, so you are committing the whole day to the coach.

Cádiz — 12 hours, the longest call

This is the standout. Cádiz itself is small and walkable straight off the ship, so 12 hours is generous. It is also the classic gateway for Seville: direct trains take about 1 hour 40 minutes each way, which with an 08:00 arrival and 20:00 departure leaves a comfortable five to six hours in the city. Jerez de la Frontera is closer still, at around 40 minutes by train.

Lisbon — 8 hours, city only

An 08:00 to 16:00 window is a solid Lisbon day if you stay in the city: Alfama, Baixa, and the Belém monuments are all doable. Sintra is not — the round trip plus the queues will run you close to the all-aboard time, and this is one of those ports where the ship will not wait.

Why This Cruise Is So Cheap

This is a repositioning cruise, and understanding that explains both the price and the compromises.

Every autumn, cruise lines move ships out of the Mediterranean and into warmer winter markets. Costa Diadema is simply relocating to the Canary Islands for the winter season. The ship has to make the journey regardless of how many passengers are aboard, so the line prices it to fill cabins rather than to maximise fare.

What you give up in exchange:

• It is one-way. You arrive 3,000 km from where you started, and no flights are included in that €449.
• More sea days. Three of the eight nights are spent crossing, including two consecutive stretches of open Atlantic.
• Awkward port hours. Repositioning schedules are built around the crossing, not around your sightseeing. That is why Barcelona is an afternoon call.
• Early November weather. Expect 16 to 19°C in the western Med and around 24°C by the time you reach Gran Canaria. Deck and pool time is a Canaries thing on this trip, not a Barcelona thing.

If those trade-offs suit you, repositioning cruises are consistently the best value in the cruise calendar. If they do not, you are better off on a round-trip Mediterranean sailing at a higher headline price.

The Honest Total Cost

The €449 fare is real, but it is not the trip price. Here is a realistic budget for two people travelling from a mid-sized European city.

Even at the top of that range it is a strong price for a nine-day trip across five countries with accommodation and food included. But anyone quoting this as a “€449 holiday” is leaving out roughly half the cost.

Getting to Savona

Savona is on the Ligurian coast, west of Genoa. The nearest airport is Genoa (GOA), about 50 km away and reachable by bus or train in around an hour. Milan Malpensa (MXP) and Milan Bergamo (BGY) are two to three hours out but far better served by budget airlines from most of Europe. Nice (NCE) is a third option, roughly 180 km along the coast. Savona has its own railway station with direct services from Genoa and Ventimiglia, and the cruise terminal is a short taxi ride from there.

Arriving the night before is strongly advised. The ship leaves at 17:00, and a delayed same-day flight into Malpensa is not a risk worth taking.

Getting home from Gran Canaria

Las Palmas cruise terminal is around 25 km from Gran Canaria Airport (LPA), roughly 25 minutes by taxi or bus. LPA is one of the best-connected leisure airports in Europe, with Ryanair, Wizz Air, easyJet, Vueling, Norwegian and TUI all operating there, so return fares to most of Europe are usually reasonable even in November.

The obvious move is to not fly home on 10 November at all. The ship docks at 13:00, and adding three or four nights in Gran Canaria costs little and turns a cruise into a proper autumn holiday.

What Is Included

Gratuities being included is worth flagging. On many lines they are charged onboard at €12 to €16 per person per night, which on an eight-night cruise would add well over €100 per person to the real price. Costa also sells All Inclusive drinks packages as an upgrade if you want bar drinks covered.

Costa Diadema entered service in November 2014 and was, at the time, the largest ship Costa had built. She carries up to around 4,900 passengers with about 1,250 crew across 14 decks, with roughly 1,860 cabins.

It is a big, busy, mainstream ship rather than a boutique one: multiple pools, a spa, a theatre, a wraparound promenade deck and a wide spread of dining. Costa’s onboard culture is distinctly Italian and its passenger mix is strongly Italian, German, French and Spanish, with announcements typically made in several languages. If you want a quiet, small-ship, English-first experience, this is the wrong ship. If you want a lively, good-value big-ship holiday and do not mind a multilingual crowd, it delivers exactly that.

Who This Cruise Suits

Good fit if you: like sea days, want a cheap way to reach the Canaries for a longer winter-sun trip, are flexible on flights, or want to try a cruise without committing to a premium fare.

Poor fit if you: want a round trip that returns you to your departure airport, need lots of time in each port, are travelling with young children who will struggle with three sea days, or want an English-language-dominant onboard experience.
