About the MSC Lirica

The MSC Lirica is one of MSC Cruises’ smaller, more manageable ships – which is exactly what makes her a good fit for a short Eastern Mediterranean run. Instead of spending your four nights walking between distant decks, you get a compact ship that docks quickly and gets you ashore fast, which matters when a port call is only seven or nine hours long.

On board you will find a main pool deck, a spa and fitness area, a theatre with nightly shows, several bars and lounges, and both buffet and main-restaurant dining. Full board is part of the fare, so breakfast, lunch and dinner are covered before you spend anything extra.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day Port Arrival Departure
1 Bari, Italy 20:30
2 At sea
3 Piraeus / Athens, Greece 07:00 16:30
4 Izmir, Türkiye 07:00 14:30
5 Istanbul, Türkiye 09:00

Note the shape of this trip: it is a one-way sailing, not a round trip. You board in Italy and disembark in Türkiye, so you will need a flight home from Istanbul rather than back to Bari.

Cruise from Bari to Athens, Izmir & Istanbul

What you will see at each stop

Bari, Italy – embarkation

The ship leaves at 20:30, so you have a full day in Puglia before boarding. Bari’s old town, Bari Vecchia, is a maze of whitewashed lanes around the Basilica di San Nicola, and it is small enough to see properly in an afternoon. Arrive a day early if you can – Puglia is one of the cheapest regions in Italy for a night before a cruise.

Piraeus / Athens, Greece – 9.5 hours ashore

Piraeus is the port for Athens, roughly 30–40 minutes from the centre by metro (Line 1 from Piraeus station). With a 07:00 arrival and 16:30 departure you have a genuine full day: the Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum and Plaka are all comfortably doable if you head straight in on the metro rather than waiting for a coach transfer.

Izmir, Türkiye – 7.5 hours ashore

Izmir is Türkiye’s third-largest city and the gateway to Ephesus, one of the best-preserved classical sites anywhere in the Mediterranean. Ephesus is about an hour away, so it is achievable within the port window but does not leave much slack – if you would rather not watch the clock, the Kordon waterfront, Konak Square and the Kemeraltı bazaar are all walkable from the berth.

Istanbul, Türkiye – disembarkation

You arrive at 09:00 and the cruise ends here. Istanbul rewards extra nights more than almost any city on this route, and flights home are cheap from both its airports, so consider building in two or three days after the ship: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace and the Grand Bazaar are all within walking distance of each other in Sultanahmet.

Cabin options and pricing

Cabin type Price per person
Inside cabin from €297
Ocean view cabin from €367
Balcony cabin from €597
Suite sold out

At €297 for four nights, the inside cabin works out at about €74 per night including all your main meals and transport between three countries – less than a mid-range hotel room in Athens or Istanbul on its own. The jump to an ocean view is only €70; the balcony is the one that doubles your outlay, and in January you will spend less time on it than you think.

Eastern Mediterranean Cruise from Bari to Athens, Izmir & Istanbul

What is included – and what costs extra

Included: your cabin, full board in the main restaurant and buffet (breakfast, lunch, dinner), on-board entertainment and shows, use of the pools, gym and most public areas, and port charges.

Not included: drinks packages, speciality restaurants, shore excursions, spa treatments, Wi-Fi, and gratuities where these are charged separately. Flights are extra unless you take the complete package from €790 p.p.

A drinks package is usually the single biggest add-on decision. On a four-night sailing with two long port days, you will be off the ship for much of the daytime, so do the sums before committing – it pays off less here than on a seven-night round trip.

Why this cruise is worth a look

  • Three countries, four nights. Italy, Greece and Türkiye without a single connecting flight or hotel change.
  • Two serious port days. 9.5 hours in Athens and 7.5 in Izmir are long calls for a short cruise – enough for the Acropolis and for Ephesus respectively.
  • January pricing. Low season is why an Eastern Mediterranean sailing costs €297 rather than triple that in July.
  • It ends in Istanbul. A one-way route is a feature if you were going to visit Istanbul anyway – you finish in a city worth several days, not back at a ferry port.

The honest caveat: January in the Eastern Mediterranean means daytime highs around 10–13°C in Athens and Istanbul, and the sea day will not be a sunbathing day. This is a sightseeing cruise, not a beach one. Pack accordingly and it is excellent value; expect summer weather and you will be disappointed.
