6-Day Western Mediterranean Cruise from Valencia to Rome

Day-by-day itinerary

Day Port Arrival Departure
1 Valencia, Spain 21:00
2 Barcelona, Spain 09:00 18:00
3 Marseille, France 08:00 17:00
4 Genoa, Italy 08:00 19:00
5 Livorno (Florence / Pisa), Italy 07:00 20:00
6 Civitavecchia / Rome, Italy 07:00

There are no sea days on this route. That is unusual for a Mediterranean itinerary and it is the main reason this one is worth a look: every single day puts you in a different city, and the port times are generous enough to actually see them.

What to do in each port

Barcelona (09:00–18:00). Nine hours is enough for the Sagrada Família and a walk through the Gothic Quarter, but book the basilica online before you sail – walk-up tickets in February still sell out by midday.

Marseille (08:00–17:00). The Vieux-Port is a ten-minute walk from the terminal shuttle drop-off. If the weather holds, the boat to the Calanques is the better use of the day than the city itself.

Genoa (08:00–19:00). Italy’s largest medieval old town, and the cruise terminal sits right at the edge of it. Eleven hours also makes Portofino or the nearer Cinque Terre villages realistic by train.

Livorno (07:00–20:00). Nobody comes for Livorno. Florence is about 90 minutes away, Pisa around 20. Thirteen hours in port is what makes Florence genuinely doable rather than a rush.

Rome (arrive 07:00). You disembark at Civitavecchia, roughly 80 km from Rome. The train to Roma Termini takes about an hour. Arriving at 07:00 gives you a full day in the city before an evening flight home.

About the MSC Sinfonia

The Sinfonia is one of MSC’s smaller, older ships – around 2,000 passengers rather than the 5,000-plus on their newest builds. That is a fair trade here. She carries fewer people through the same ports, boards and disembarks faster, and gets into Genoa and Livorno without the queues a mega-ship generates. What you give up is the water parks and headline entertainment of the newer fleet. On an itinerary with no sea days, you are ashore most of the daylight hours anyway.

Is this cruise right for you?

Yes, if you want to see several Mediterranean cities without changing hotels, you like a packed itinerary, and February prices matter more to you than February weather.

Probably not, if you want a relaxing sea-day cruise, you are travelling with children who need onboard entertainment, or you want to swim – this is a sightseeing route in winter, not a beach holiday.

The catch worth knowing about

Two things. First, the price is per person based on two sharing an inside cabin – solo travellers pay a supplement. Second, it is one-way: you fly into Valencia and home from Rome. Open-jaw tickets often cost no more than a return, but price them before you book the cabin, because the cruise fare is only part of the total.

February in the western Mediterranean means roughly 12–16°C and a real chance of rain. That is why a six-day cruise costs €339 instead of triple that in July. If you are going for the cities rather than the sun, it is the best value window of the year.
