Europe’s most powerful passports for 2022

Germany’s passport has once again been ranked in the second position in the list of the world’s most powerful passports, while its citizens are able to visit a total of 190 countries worldwide without being required to apply for a visa at first.

Such ranking has been made through the recent publication of the Henley Passport Index, regarding the first quarter of 2022, based on the data provided by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Schengen Visa Info reported.

According to the index, the first place in this ranking is occupied by two non-EU countries, Japan and Singapore, while each of these countries’ passports permits their holders to visit a total of 192 countries worldwide without being obliged to apply for a visa at first.

The recent classification has also revealed that European countries’ passports continue to be ranked in the first positions, while their passports give access to a large number of countries around the world.

Finland, Italy, Luxembourg and Spain, share the third position, meaning that passports of each of these countries give their holders access to a total of 189 destinations.

In fourth place are placed the following European countries:

  • Austria
  • Denmark
  • France
  • Netherlands
  • Sweden

According to Henley and Passport ranking, each countries’ mentioned above passports allow their holders to travel to 188 countries worldwide without being obliged to have a visa in order to do so.

In the fifth position have been placed Ireland and Portugal, with holders of both passports permitted to travel visa-free to 187 countries worldwide.

At the same time, the following countries share the position:

  • Belgium
  • New Zealand
  • Norway
  • Switzerland
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

According to the report, holders of these six countries’ passports have visa-free access to a total of 186 destinations.

In the seventh position have been placed the European countries such as the Czech Republic, Greece and Malta, as well as non-EU countries such as Australia and Canada. Each of these countries’ passports gives its holders visa-free access to a total of 185 destinations.

Holders of Hungarian and Polish passports are permitted to travel to a total of 183 destinations worldwide without acquiring a visa in advance.

In the ninth position have been placed Lithuania and Slovakia. Each of these countries’ passports gives their citizens access to a total of 182 destinations, visa-free.

The following countries have been placed in tenth place, while holders of these countries’ passports are eligible to travel to a total of 181 destinations worldwide without being obliged to apply for a visa in advance.

  • Estonia
  • Latvia
  • Slovenia

In addition, the report has also revealed that the 11th position is also occupied by another European country, Iceland. Holders of Iceland’s passports are eligible to visit a total of 180 destinations in worldwide countries without being obliged to apply for a visa.
