Finland to permit non essential travel from EU / Schengen Area

The Finnish authorities have announced that more relaxed entry restrictions will apply to arrivals from European Union Member States and Schengen Area countries.

In a press release issued by the Ministry of Interior of Finland, it was revealed that such a decision will apply to all citizens from EU/Schengen Area countries, provided that they have been vaccinated against the COVID-19 with one of the approved vaccines or have tested negative during the last six months. Thus, in line with the new modifications, travellers from the EU/Schengen Area are allowed to enter Finland for non-essential purposes. According to the Ministry, the changes will become effective from June 21, Schengen Visa Info reported.

In addition, the Ministry of Interior’s announcement reveals that the restrictions on internal border traffic will also be reduced between Finland and other Schengen Area countries. Based on the epidemiological situation prevailing in Poland and Hungary, Finland has decided to remove internal border checks for the two countries. Moreover, the entry restrictions do not apply to boat traffic between Finland and the following Schengen Area countries: Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Austria, Greece, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, France, Sweden, Germany, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Denmark, the Czech Republic, and Estonia.

Conversely, the Government has decided to extend the internal border controls and the restrictions on external border traffic until July 11.

“The permitted grounds for entry at border crossing points open to passenger traffic are the return of those living in Finland or another EU or Schengen state, as well as other necessary reasons. However, non-Finnish citizens residing in another EU or Schengen state do not have the right to return to their country of residence via Finland, except for air traffic, if the transit is related to leisure travel,” the Ministry’s statement reads.

However, entry restrictions will be removed for arrivals from Monaco, Romania, and San Marino.

Besides the countries mentioned above, restrictions have already been abolished for Vatican City, Australia, South Korea, Singapore, Israel, New Zealand, and Rwanda since these countries reported low COVID-19 infection cases, according to Schengen Visa Info.
