Fly Atlantic: a new low cost airline to enter the transatlantic market

Fly Atlantic recently announced that it will begin operations in 2024. The new low-cost airline will be headquartered in Belfast, Northern Ireland. In addition to short-haul European flights, it intends to enter the transatlantic market with low-cost flights from Belfast to the United States and Canada. Of course, the fundamental issue will be that making a profit in the transatlantic airline industry is notoriously difficult. Two of the three models it seeks to emulate failed to make low-cost transatlantic flights work. During the epidemic, Norwegian halted its long-haul flights, while Wow Air declared bankruptcy in 2019. Primera Air, La Compagnie’s UK-US business class route, and even British Airways, which failed to resurrect all business class flights from London City Airport to New York after the pandemic, CNN reported.

There are currently no direct transatlantic flights from Belfast. Dublin, in the Republic of Ireland, is a popular departure point for flights to the United States, thanks to facilities at Dublin and Shannon airports that allow passengers to clear US border check before flying. However, because Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, this is unlikely; the preclearance facility is now only available in six nations globally, Ireland being one of them, according to CNN.

When fully operational, the airline plans to fly to 35 destinations from Belfast and create 21,000 new jobs by 2030. This amount includes 1,000 new airline jobs as well as up to 21,000 new jobs in tourism and service sectors. Flights will be available for purchase beginning in early 2024. The airline stated that it will initially operate six aircraft at Belfast International Airport, with ambitions to expand to 18 aircraft by 2028. It is negotiating aircraft with both Boeing and Airbus, with the choice between the Boeing Max and the Airbus A321, Daily Mail wrote.
