Huge flight cancellations predicted to and from Poland

The European authorities have anticipated a big number of flight cancellations in light of the current situation in Poland. Poland’s authorities have been unable to reach a deal with air traffic controllers on wages and other working conditions.

According to Reuters, the disruption, which will not only affect flights to and from Poland but also those that pass through the latter’s airspace, could start next week, on May 1. This is only a day after the end of the notice period for air traffic controllers that decide to quit rather than agree on the new regulations.

A spokesperson has revealed that the main reason why some air traffic controllers have decided not to agree to the new working regulations is that they think that the new rules threaten safety. Nonetheless, talks are expected to resume during the day today, April 24, according to Schengen Visa Info.

Eurocontrol, the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation, told Reuters that if no deal is reached, Poland’s Civil Aviation Authority will drastically reduce the number of flights in the country’s airspace.

“As of May 1, the Polish CAA will implement a flight cancellation programme to significantly reduce the number of flights into/out of Polish airspace,” the statement of Eurocontrol reads.

Additionally, it was revealed that Warsaw’s two airports were scheduled to handle an average of more than 500 aircraft each day in May.

However, Polish air traffic controllers have disclosed that 180 of the city’s 206 controllers have resigned rather than work under the new conditions.

The union explained that the cut in pay for air traffic controllers as well as the increase in the working hours is unacceptable. Through a statement that was issued earlier this week, the union said that they are fighting for safety and for the return of a culture of work while emphasising that an environment of trust is ‘built, not bought’.
