Maldives to vaccinate tourists

Maldives is to offer visitors vaccinations on arrival as part of three-pronged initiative aimed at reviving the country’s hard hit tourism sector, said its tourism minister Abdulla Mausoom. To date, around 53% of the country’s population has received their first dose. That includes 90% of its front-line tourism workers, CNBC reported.

The plan won’t start immediately. Under the proposal, vaccines will only be offered to tourists once the country’s entire population of 530,000 is vaccinated. As of April 20, 6.8% of the country’s population is fully vaccinated, per The New York Times’ COVID vaccination tracker. Per a CNBC report from April 14, the initiative is part of Tourism Minster Dr. Abdulla Mausoom’s “3V tourism” plan: Visit, Vaccinate, and Vacation. Tourists will receive two vaccine doses. Mausoom did not specify which vaccine travelers would receive and whether or not they would have to pay for the vaccine themselves, Insider wrote.

It should me mentioned, that the Maldives will no longer require tourists to show proof of a negative Covid test result to enter the islands – provided travellers are fully vaccinated against Covid-19. That means having received both doses of one of the approved jabs at least two weeks before travelling to the dreamy holiday hotspot. A statement from the country’s Ministry of Tourism read: “Travelers to Maldives (including tourists) who have completed their two doses of Covid-19 vaccination (recognised by WHO) 2 weeks prior to travel are now exempted from the pre-arrival Negative PCR requirement and do not require to undergo or observe the travel quarantine on arrival to the Maldives,” as reported by Mirror.
