Tourist magnet Spain will let people from anywhere in the world who are vaccinated against COVID-19 enter the country from June 7, hoping to galvanise a recovery in the devastated tourism sector. The world’s second most visited country before the pandemic hit, foreign tourism to Spain plunged 80% last year as restrictions brought leisure travel to a virtual standstill, leaving its beaches, palaces and hotels almost deserted. Entry will be allowed to vaccinated travellers regardless of their country of origin, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on Friday at Madrid’s FITUR international tourism trade fair, Reuters reported.

Beginning May 24, travelers from countries outside the EU that have been deemed a low coronavirus risk — like Australia and New Zealand — will be able to enter Spain without presenting a negative PCR test. “They’re welcome — more than welcome — without restrictions nor health controls,” Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said of travelers from these low-risk countries, Travel and Leisure wrote.

Spain’s announcement comes a day after the EU outlined plans to welcome vaccinated countries to all 27 of the bloc’s members, although the plans are awaiting formal approval. Members would be free to impose new restrictions, however, on countries with circulating variants of interest. Cyprus, Greece, and a number of other European countries heavily reliant on the tourism trade have already set up their own rules to welcome visitors, unwilling to wait while the bloc hashed out EU-wide rules. France’s Macron has said that discussions between his administration and the White House are already underway to hammer out a travel arrangement between the two countries, according to Forbes.
