Costa Cruises resumed sailings

Italy’s Costa Cruises, the world’s oldest cruise line, resumed operations Sunday with its luxury cruise ship Costa Deliziosa departing Trieste carrying only Italian guests. Costa Deliziosa is the first of the company’s four cruise ships scheduled to depart for destinations, mostly within Europe, for the first time since the pandemic shut down operations. She will be followed by the Costa Diadema, scheduled to depart Genoa on Sept. 19, as reported by International Business Times.

Costa Crociere S.p.A.  operating as Costa Cruises (Italian: Costa Crociere), is an Italian cruise line founded in 1854 and organized as a wholly owned subsidiary of Carnival Corporation & plc since 2000. Based in Genoa, Italy, the cruise line primarily caters to the Italian cruise market, but the company’s fourteen ships, which all sail under the Italian flag, provides itineraries sailing to countries globally.

The ship is heading for southern Italy and will call at Bari, Brindisi, Corigliano-Rossano, Siracusa and Catania, according to a press release. Carrying only Italian residents as part of its precautions against Covid-19 contagion, its weeklong outing will follow an all-Italy itinerary of Adriatic and Mediterranean ports. Following a strict protocol, passengers had their temperatures taken, were tested for Covid-19 and completed a health questionnaire before being allowed on board. The crew had been tested for the virus and spent 14 days in quarantine before the departure. Social distancing rules also meant the elimination of the traditional dinner buffet, and the use of restaurants, bars and swimming pools will be carefully scheduled to limit numbers, according to The Local Italy.

The company has developed a health & safety protocol including COVID-19 swab testing for all guests and crew, temperature screening, tours of destinations on protected excursions, physical distancing thanks partly to a reduction in the number of passengers, new ways of enjoying shipboard amenities and services, enhanced sanitization and increased health care facilities.
