Emirates expands its Latin American network by returning to Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires

Emirates has resumed flights to two South American cities, Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires, which had previously been halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Flight EK247, operated by a Boeing 777, was greeted warmly as it arrived in Brazil and Argentina on Wednesday. To commemorate the airline’s return to Rio de Janeiro, RIOgaleo organised a traditional water cannon salute. Samba dancers welcomed passengers and crew with a lively cultural performance in the presence of the airport’s management team.

Emirates executives Salem Obaidalla, Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations, Americas, and Stephane Perard, Manager for Brazil, cut a symbolic ribbon to mark the resumption of the Dubai-Rio de Janeiro-Buenos Aires route before boarding the flight to Buenos Aires.

Emirates has restored over 90% of its pre-pandemic network, which included over 130 destinations including Dubai, with the restart of services to Argentina, which were first introduced in 2012. The EK247/EK248 code will be used for the four times per week flights from Dubai to Rio de Janeiro with connections to Buenos Aires. Four times per week, at 08:05, EK247 takes off from Dubai and arrives in Rio de Janeiro at 15:25. A 1 hour and 45 minute layover is followed by a 17:10 departure for Argentina and a 20:40 arrival in Buenos Aires. The return flight, EK248, departs from Buenos Aires’ Ezeiza International Airport at 22:20 and arrives in Rio de Janeiro at 01:10 the following day. It then takes off again at 02:55 and flies to Dubai, where it will arrive at 23:35.

Through Emirates SkyCargo, the airline’s cargo division, the restart of Emirates flights will also help trade between Argentina, Brazil, and the rest of the world. With a cargo capacity of about 20 tonnes per flight, the airline’s wide-body Boeing 777 aircraft can transport regional exports from Argentina and Brazil to customers in the Middle East, Europe, and other markets while also facilitating the import of necessities like pharmaceuticals.
