Next Tuesday will mark a very significant moment for all Israelis: some 15 months after the country entered its first lockdown to fight the coronavirus crisis, businesses, cultural and sport venues, tourist attractions and family celebrations will not be limited by any pandemic restriction any more: no more cap on number of accesses, no more need for unvaccinated people to get tested, no more special regulations on serving food. Only one requirement will remain, wearing a mask indoors, and that might also be soon gone, as health officials and experts have said in the past few days, The Jerusalem Post wrote.

Israel reopened its borders to foreign tourists on Sunday after a fall in COVID-19 infections but said it would take time for visitors to start arriving and to revive the tourism industry. Under an easing of coronavirus restrictions, the government went ahead with a plan to start letting in small groups of tourists from countries using vaccines it has approved. Under a pilot programme due to continue until June 15, Israel gave the green light to visits by 20 groups of between 5 and 30 tourists from countries including the United States, Britain and Germany. Another 20 groups were chosen to be on standby if any of the first 20 tour operators did not meet Israel’s conditions, Reuters reported.

The plan was officially in effect as of Sunday. But since registration only began last week, “it is unlikely that the first groups will arrive before the beginning of June,” a Tourism Ministry spokesperson told Reuters. At first, only tourist groups will be allowed to enter the country and they will be accompanied by vaccinated guides and drivers. Israel plans to expand entry for tourists in the coming months, and potentially welcome individual tourists in July, according to The Times of Israel.
