“Camera on” is from now on the motto at Hamburg Airport. Following a successful introduction phase, the Star Alliance’s biometric face field recognition technology has now been formally introduced in Hamburg. Passengers flying Austrian, SWISS, or Lufthansa will be able to get through security and board contactless and quickly with the new technology. Without a boarding card or smartphone, a simple glance will suffice in the future.

How does it work?

Interested participants of the loyalty programme Miles & More need to register once for Star Alliance Biometrics at least 24 hours before their next Austrian, Lufthansa or SWISS flight. They will need a valid passport and the most recent version of the Lufthansa or Miles & More apps to do so. Once registered, they will be able to travel through Hamburg Airport’s central security checkpoint and boarding gates A17 and C16 without being contacted. The entrances to the central security checkpoint’s gate and fast lanes are clearly marked. Their face is immediately recorded and compared to your stored image using the camera located there. The travelers may retain their mouth-nose coverings, which are currently required for health protection in the terminal. If a positive match is made, the entrances immediately open.

Register one time, use multiple times

The system is based on the Star Alliance Biometrics platform, which was successfully introduced in November 2020 at the Frankfurt, Munich, and Vienna hubs, with the goal of providing travelers with a smooth travel experience. Hamburg Airport is thus the fourth airport to be included. Once registered, travellers can access all participating airports using biometric access. Star Alliance Biometrics is powered by NEC Corporation’s NEC I: Delight facial recognition technology and is available to Miles & More participants who have consented to the usage of their biometric data during the travel process.

Data protection and security

Personal information, such as photographs and other identifiers, is encrypted and securely saved on the platform. The system was designed from the start to adhere to applicable data protection rules and to utilize cutting-edge facial recognition technology. Personal data storage is reduced to a bare minimum. For instance, no customer names are stored.

“We are delighted that Lufthansa, Austrian and SWISS are now also offering Star Alliance facial recognition at Hamburg Airport,” says Mirjam Fröhlich, Head of Passenger and Baggage Management at Hamburg Airport. “This is a plus in convenience for participating passengers entering the security checkpoint and at selected gates. The new technology offers additional time savings and makes the checking process at central points of the airport even smoother, which is just what our passengers want.”

I am pleased that we can now also offer our guests Star Alliance Biometrics in Hamburg after the successful start in Frankfurt, Munich and Vienna.”
