New Zealand to reopen borders for vaccinated travelers
New Zealand is re-opening its borders to the world, after two years spent closed off by the pandemic. From 13 April, vaccinated tourists from Australia will be able to enter the country without isolating. From 2 May vaccinated tourists from other visa-waiver countries, including the US, UK, Germany, Canada, Japan, Singapore and others, will be allowed entry.
“We’re ready to welcome the world back,” prime minister Jacinda Ardern said. “New Zealand will be ready with open arms.” It is reopening now after vaccinating the vast majority of adults – 95% of those aged 12 and over are now double-vaccinated, and 72% have had a booster shot, according to The Guardian.
Vaccinated Australians will be able to enter New Zealand without needing to isolate from 11:59 p.m. on April 12. They must provide a negative pre-departure test and complete two rapid antigen tests in the days after arrival, Bloomberg wrote.
The move is part of efforts to accelerate economic recovery, according to a statement from Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. Originally, the Ardern government had planned to reopen by July 2022, but has moved up its schedule. New Zealand closed its borders in March 2020 in an effort to stop the spread of Covid-19. The closure and restriction measures were successful in halting the spread of the virus, though the government faced extensive criticism from its own citizens, who were unable to return, CNN Travel reported.
