Sicily will pay half the price of your flight price. Sicily aims to lure back foreign tourists after the lockdown by paying half the price of their plane tickets, one in every three of their hotel nights and all their tickets for museums and archaeological sites. The regional government will use a €50 million war chest to pay for the scheme after coronavirus robbed it of about €1 billion in March and April. The vouchers will be made available on the island’s tourism website. With 13 per cent of GDP coming from tourism, Italy is keen to get the sector going after the lockdown ends on May 4 and is mulling ways to create social distancing on beaches, The Times reported.
Italy is amongst a number of European countries, including Spain, which is considering methods of employing social distancing on beaches. The Balearic islands’ Restauración Mallorca also recently presented an idea for ensuring social distancing while being able to reopen restaurants and bars. It is likely that other destinations will attempt similar methods once lockdown comes to an end, Express wrote.
In a meeting between the government and unions, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said: “The revision of the social distancing measures does not mean a ‘free everyone’, but we cannot shut citizens at home forever.” Under plans being considered by the government, restaurants could be opened again for take-aways on May 4 to ease strain on the hospitality sector. The manufacturing and construction sectors would be allowed to get working again at the same time.Retail outlets may then be given the green light to open a week later, followed by a full de-shuttering of restaurants from May 18, according to Mirror.
