Iceland International Airport to Offer Flights to 83 Destinations This Summer

This summer season is set to be quite busy for Iceland’s Keflavik International Airport, as the same will be offering flights to 83 world destinations through 26 different airlines.

In a statement issued on April 14, the national airport and air navigation service provider of Iceland, Isavia, has revealed that this year the airport will have connections with five more destinations compared to last year when 25 airlines connected the airport with a total of 78 destinations, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Meanwhile, in the summer of 2019, Keflavik Airport was connected with 71 destinations through 26 airlines.

As one connection has been terminated, there are in total six new destinations this summer as follows:

  • Aalborg
  • Athens
  • Detroit
  • Hamilton Toronto
  • Porto
  • Tel Aviv

Regarding connections with individual airlines, there will be some changes, and among others, Icelandair will offer more flights but lower passenger capacity due to the use of smaller aircraft.

In addition, the Icelandic airline Play will offer around 66 per cent more flights and an 85 per cent increase in passenger capacity. Whereas, the US airline Delta is adding Detroit as a new destination.

On the other hand, United Airlines will stop flights between Keflavik and Newark.

As the airport explains, Finnair has almost the same passenger capacity as in 2019, and Air Canada also has the same schedule as in 2022. Austria will extend its season from June – August to April to October and Eurowings has added Hamburg as a new destination.

During this summer season at Keflavik airport, there are expected to be slightly less than 36,000 take-offs and landings, thus marking an increase of 22 per cent from 2022 and an increase of 26 per cent from the summer of 2019. Meanwhile, the total passenger capacity is estimated to be just over 6.5 million, with an increase of 20 per cent for 2019 and 2022.

“Isavia´s passenger forecast predicts that 2.8 million passengers will go through Keflavik Airport in June, July and August. That would be about 400 thousand more passengers compared to the same period in 2019,” Director for airline relations and route development at Isavia, Grétar Már Garðarsson, has pointed out in this regard.

According to Garðarsson this means that this summer will be busier at Keflavik Airport compared to the summer of 2019. He also added that Keflavik Airport is one of the few airports in the world that has fully recovered passenger numbers after the pandemic.

He also revealed that this year ACI Europe expects the number of passengers passing through European airports to reach only 91 per cent of the numbers passing through them four years ago.
