Boeing announces $10 mln contribution to combat climate change

Boeing announced its support for the Yale Center for Natural Carbon Capture’s ambitious endeavor to address climate change via scientific study and solution-oriented innovations. The five-year, $10 million contribution will be used to fund research into large-scale carbon capture methods.

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time and at Boeing, we believe we have a responsibility to take action and help find solutions to reverse its effect,” said Chris Raymond, Boeing’s chief sustainability officer. “To find sustainable solutions, we must work together across industry and academia, and invest in the scientific research and development that are crucial to the success of tackling climate change. This program brings all those components together and we’re honored to support Yale’s groundbreaking and important work in this space.”

The Yale Center for Natural Carbon Capture’s purpose is to create natural solutions for reducing co2 emissions. The Center’s initial focus will be on near-term solutions capable of capturing around one gigaton per year, which is similar to the amount of carbon dioxide emitted annually by airlines. The center is creating a portfolio of carbon removal technologies that will help build the planet’s capacity to lower atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations within next half-century through natural processes.

Boeing is committed to environmental stewardship in all aspects of its business, as well as in the usage and maintenance of its products. Boeing has achieved net-zero carbon emissions in its operations during the last two years. Additionally, the corporation is committed, along with the rest of the global civil aviation industry, to reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

As part of Boeing’s collaboration with worldwide partners to advance aerospace sustainability, the business seeks funding for research and development from sources other than the aerospace sector. Natural carbon capture has the potential to significantly reduce the effects of greenhouse gas emissions while simultaneously providing possible co-benefits such as higher agricultural yields, wildlife conservation, and water purification.
